Therapy

My approach to therapy focuses on resolving the root cause of presenting problems. In individual therapy, I use attachment-informed EMDR and DBR therapy as my main therapeutic approaches for a variety of presenting problems because I find it to be the quickest and most effective approach to reduce distressing symptoms and restore a state of wellness. I integrate faith based therapy (if requested) and IFS therapy / parts-work with EMDR therapy.

What to expect from therapy

First steps

Initially I provide a free 15 minute telephone consultation to discuss the issues that have led you to seek therapy, your therapy goals, and we would determine whether we could work together.

After the initial phone conversation, there is no obligation to work together.

Initial assessment

I start by offering an initial assessment that usually lasts for 50 minutes. The second session may also be an assessment if you have a history of trauma or there is complexity to the problem. Alternatively, I offer extended assessment sessions of 90 minutes where there is a history of trauma or complexity to the problem.

During our initial assessment, we will discuss together the main difficulties that you are seeking help with, your goals for therapy, and agree a therapy plan that best suits your needs. I would ask relevant information about your current situation, family / life history and anything else that you want to tell me about.

This is an opportunity for us to begin to get to know each other and for us to decide whether we are a good fit. It is important that you feel comfortable and safe.

Ongoing sessions

We would meet weekly for 50 minutes (unless otherwise agreed) at the same time and same day of the week.

Usually we would start with 6 sessions and then review. I like to hold regular reviews of the therapy every 6 sessions or so to discuss in more detail how we are working together and if therapy is meeting your needs.

Generally, clients attend for 12-20 weekly sessions, but contracts can be shorter or longer depending on your needs. Ending therapy would also be a collaborative process, depending on your ideas and my clinical judgement.

The number of sessions needed will vary from person to person depending on what you want to work on, your history, needs, severity and duration of symptoms. A single-incident trauma may be resolved in 8-12 (90 minute) sessions; multiple complex trauma and childhood trauma will usually take longer than this.

I also offer intensive EMDR therapy with increased length and frequency of appointments, and intensive DBR therapy with increased frequency of appointments, which can help you achieve your goals more quickly.
